Lolita’s Personality
Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't involved enough with them. If not properly socialized macaws may become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial to have clear boundaries set so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that enjoy playing, climbing and play. They require 2 to 3 hours a day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a fun pet they also make loving pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can be a distraction to those living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near children who might be scared by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. It is not an easy process, and it is important that the owner is patient and realizes that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member in a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean and not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. Lolita's Diet
